How to Evaluate Conveyor Component Suppliers: A Cost Controller's 6-Step Checklist

If you're the person responsible for buying conveyor components—rollers, drum motors, drives, belting—this checklist is for you. If a supplier avoids that kind of technical reference in their literature, they probably won't be helpful when you need real problem-solving support.

  • What was your actual maintenance spend in years two and three?
  • How many rollers or belts have you replaced, and why?
  • When something failed, how long did the supplier take to respond?

The most honest response I ever got was a maintenance manager who said "no major issues, but we also don't track it that well." That told me the customer wasn't measuring, so their "no issues" wasn't informative. The best reference is someone who can say "we replaced 14 rollers last year and the supplier's response time stayed under 48 hours." That's specific enough to be useful.

Mistakes to avoid when you do this evaluation

A few errors that keep showing up:

  • Assuming one manufacturing country is inherently better than another. This idea comes from an era when quality gaps were much wider. Today, a well-run plant in one country can match or exceed a plant elsewhere. Evaluate the specific line you're buying from.
  • Forgetting about older belt types. If someone asks "what is drift?" in an operation that still runs a canvas belt, the answer will be different than with a modern synthetic belt. Canvas belts have been around for decades, and they behave differently—they stretch, react to humidity, and track differently. Match the component to the belt you actually run.
  • Skipping the TCO calculation on "small" purchases. A $4,200 annual contract for rollers feels like small potatoes until downtime is measured in production loss. There's no threshold under which cost analysis is a waste of time.

Take the six steps and apply them to your current conveyor setup. Write down the operating conditions. Calculate the TCO for your main spare part categories. Verify the supply chain for those parts. Get a concrete answer from suppliers about drift and tracking. Check whether your system is modular enough for future changes. And call three reference sites with specific questions.
