Interroll Logo and 113S Drum Motor: A Quality Inspector's Verification Checklist
I'm a quality/compliance manager at a material handling company. I review incoming drive components before they go on the line—roughly 200+ unique items a year. If you're dealing with a new distributor, do this before you pay the invoice. It's easier to dispute a delivery while the payment is still pending. You'll need a flat work surface, calipers, a multimeter with a current clamp, and a camera or phone for documentation. Nothing exotic.
The Interroll 113S Inspection Checklist
1. Check the Interroll Logo Before Anything Else
The Interroll logo on the 113S is usually on the end cover or the fixed shaft. It should be cleanly embossed, cast, or laser-marked. If it looks like a flimsy sticker on something that's supposed to be an OEM motor, that's a red flag—not proof, but a red flag.

Also, check the nameplate attachment. A nameplate that has clearly been swapped from another motor is more common than you would think. If the rivets look damaged or the plate edges are worn unevenly, that's a reason to ask for traceability.
3. Inspect the Drum Surface, Welds, and Coating
Look at the rolling surface before mounting. The drum is the part that touches the belt. A scratch or rust spot can lead to belt wear, chatter, or tracking drift. Tracking drift is a different kind of drift than the electrical one in Step 4, but it matters. The weld seam should be continuous and smooth. A rough weld can create a high spot that shows through the belt after a few weeks.
Check the coating too. Bubbling paint near the end caps might mean the motor was exposed to high pressure washing or some other unusual condition in storage. Check for dents on the edges of the drum. A dent that looks small can be enough to cause a periodic thump in the belt, especially on a small-diameter drum like the 113S.
4. Run a No-Load Drift Test
Connect the motor to rated voltage with no belt attached. Run it for 15 minutes and log the current every minute. A healthy motor will hold a fairly stable current after warm-up. What you are looking for is drift: a slow, continuous rise in current, or a drop that doesn't settle.
In November 2023, one batch of 113S motors looked fine for the first 10 minutes, then current started drifting upward by about 0.1 A per minute. The supplier's lab said 'within tolerance.' We rejected the lot. When I compared the trace of the failing motor against a known-good motor, I finally understood why the trend matters more than the absolute number. The most frustrating part: if we had only tested for 5 minutes, the entire lot would have passed.
Set up the test on a non-flammable surface and make sure the shaft key is fully inserted or completely removed. A loose key can fly out when the motor starts. Use the same meter and clamp position for all readings. It takes 15 minutes—or rather, closer to 20 when you add setup and labeling. I should add that we don't test every motor in a large order; we test one per pallet and a second if the first looks odd.
5. Cycle the Power and Listen
Power the motor on and off three times. A normal magnetic hum is fine. Grinding, squealing, or a high-pitched whine is not. This is subjective, but if it sounds wrong, it usually is. Also rotate the shaft by hand if possible. Some magnetic resistance is normal in a permanent-magnet drum motor, but it should not feel lumpy or scrape.
At the end of the no-load run, touch the drum surface. This is not a precision measurement, but a temperature that's too hot to hold is a red flag for excess bearing friction or winding resistance. If you have a thermal camera or infrared thermometer, aim for a rise of roughly 50 C above ambient as a first-pass limit, and then verify against the Interroll spec for the exact motor variant.
6. Measure the Shaft and Mounting Dimensions
Measure the shaft diameter, keyway width, bolt circle, and mounting flange at least once per lot. This is the step most people skip. A motor can pass every electrical test and still have the wrong bolt spacing. I lost a weekend once because the keyway was 0.5 mm too narrow. It seated, but the shaft wouldn't take the sprocket. I knew I should measure it, but I thought 'it's the same motor as last year.' It wasn't.
